Design Project: Evening Gown

Today I want to share with  you a project I did. Evening dresses are so much fun to design and make.
The dress I am going to show you today is part of a collection of four dresses.

My inspiration was the mid 30's fashion, the screen stars and the dresses they wore. Back in that era, hollywood was very important in the field of fashion. Common people wanted to recreate the dresses and looks they saw in the movie stars of the time (much like today though). The dresses had a lot of flowing fabric (greek inspired) and many details mostly at the back , like ruffles, jewelry, and embroidery. Of course I also wanted to make it a bit more modern and wearable.

Here's a bit of my inspiration and the "final" sketch.

I made the pattern myself, working on my mannequin. It took me a little bit less than a week to finish , the embroidery at the back was really laborious but it looked so gorgeous at the end.
The color is quite special, it is hard to find a dress on this shade on local stores.
Although this was designed for Spring/Summer 2011 it is perfect for this summer evening events. The color is so in at the moment, and to me it has such a nice vintage vibe to it.
I made some changes at the waist to make it more flattering, the drapping in the front gives it a very romantic look.

I have to confess that even though I tried to sell it,
I just couldn't let go of it. It is a piece I sometimes stare at and feel so proud of my work!.
